Winemaker's Notes
Gewürztraminer may not be easy to spell, but as a white grape variety it is particularly easy to recognize and enjoy. Its deep color, spice-filled heady aromas and full-bodied character distinguish it as a grape capable of yielding a magnificent array of wines ranging from dry to sweet. Gewürztraminer is a direct descendent of the Traminer grape variety, originally hailing from the small village of Termeno in Italys Tyrolean Alps. Dating back to 1000 A.D., it was popular in this area until the 16th century, when it was supplanted by other more prolific varieties. The variety has also been associated with the Alsace region of France since the Middle Ages, and is still one the areas most widely planted and highly prized grape varieties. It is, in fact, Richard Arrowood's passion for Alsatian wines, coupled with a shortage of high-quality California Gewürztraminer that led to the small planting by Saralee Kunde and subsequent production of our own Alsatian-style wine. The end result is a complex and unusually solid age-worthy wine with intense spice and floral aromatics. Layers of rich textures and flavors of rose petal and lychee nuts are followed by a touch of crisp acidity in the long, lengthy finish. This wine will complement a variety of foods including chicken or pork, but it is particularly well suited for hot, spicy dishes such as Asian, Middle Eastern or Latin American fare.

Vintage
With our debut vintage of 2001 Gewürztraminer from Saralee's Vineyard in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, Richard Arrowood has once again shown how the right combination of climate, soil and winemaking technique can produce a delicious wine of exceptional complexity and character.

Vineyard
Because of its cooler climate and shallow soils, Saralee's Vineyard presents the perfect microclimate for growing the somewhat temperamental Gewürztraminer. At harvest, we wait for the fruit to ripen fully in order to maximize the aromatics and flavor. We whole cluster press to minimize bitterness and then cold ferment in temperature controlled stainless steel.

Fermentation & Aging
100% Tank Fermented, No Malolactic Fermentation
