Winemaker's Notes
Pinot Blanc, while perhaps not the most famous white wine grape in the world, is nonetheless one of our favorite varietals here at Arrowood. We are especially fond of how wine made from this Burgundian grape exudes such vibrant perfume and flavors. From nose to palate to mouth feel, this Pinot Blanc is a sensation and indeed shows its European heritage.
The grape itself is said to be a white permutation of Pinot Gris, which is a lighter-berried version of Pinot Noir. Many older California vines labeled Pinot Blanc are often in fact the lesser Muscadet grape Melon, a widely-planted yet not as distinguished varietal. In Sonoma County, were fortunate that Saralee's Vineyard is one of the few vineyards in the state to produce the true, certified Pinot Blanc clone.
Vintage
Our 1998 Pinot Blanc is a wonderfully bold wine packed with intense fruit and a deep, lush complexity. Aromas of melon and honeysuckle are front and center, along with elements of pear, orange and lemon. Its fruit-packed palate is luxuriously evident in forward notes of orange blossom, peach, and honey cream with a full-bodied finish and nice French oak balance integrated within the fruit structure.
Fermentation & Aging
This Pinot Blanc was fermented in and then aged sur lie for seven additional months in new French oak barrels before bottling. This added complexity, without compromising the wines intense fruit qualities, imparts subtle nuances of oak and spice that will further enrich the mouth feel of this complex and tasty wine.
