Winemaker's Notes
Our 2007 Viognier from Saralee's Vineyard is rich and exotic. It boasts an intense nose packed with tropical fruit, toasted nuts and lime blossoms.
The texture is thick, lush and creamy. Malolactic fermentation and eight months in French oak barrels have added weight and complexity to the wine.
Long viewed as a warm-climate variety, Viognier has actually experienced its greatest success in some of California's cooler AVAs.
The Russian River Valley, in particular, is one of the prized locations for this site-sensitive grape. The mild temperatures and lack of
humidity in this maritime region seem to accentuate the strong aromatics and rich texture inherent in Viognier.
Of all the white Rhône varieties, Viognier enjoys the largest following around the world. From near extinction a mere four decades ago,
the grape's popularity has exploded in its native France and most other important wine regions around the globe. Today, in California
alone, there are roughly 2,500 acres devoted to Viognier.
